The Viola had 24 shots against their relegation-threatened opponents and also had a penalty decision in their favour overturned by the VAR system.

However, Pioli said his players’ ‘lack of precision’ was the main factor behind the end of their six-match winning run in Serie A.

“Only the goal was missing today,” Pioli told reporters post-match. “When a team has 10 opportunities to score, it means you have done well.

“SPAL suffered a lot more today than they did in the last seven or eight matches. It wasn’t a great day in front of goal.

“Bad luck does not exist. Today we were wasteful, when you lack precision that’s the way things go.

“At Roma [in the 2-0 victory] we did well. We weren’t lucky to score two goals from three shots.”

Fiorentina’s next Serie A assignment is a home match with Lazio as they continue to chase a Europa League place.

And Pioli has a high opinion of Simone Inzaghi’s Biancocelesti.

“Now, we have six more matches, the next of which is very important.

“Lazio? When we faced them last, they seemed much stronger than Roma and Juventus.

“However, we have grown a lot and we can compete with them.”
