Inter Coach Stefano Pioli “hasn’t decided” yet whether to use a 3-4-3 system against giant-killers Genoa, but “mentality makes the difference.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“It’s very important for us to win, for the table, for confidence, for everything that goes with a victory,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Clearly we are lagging behind, want to improve and we have a difficult game coming up, but want to take it home.”

The Nerazzurri crashed out of the Europa League, but ended that campaign on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Sparta Prague using a new 3-4-3 system.

“If we do play with three at the back, which is yet to be decided, the general concepts remain the same. We want to be a compact and positive side that moves off the ball a great deal and above all moves well. The starting positions don’t change that.

“I think the entire team needs to work better off the ball in order to protect the defence, which requires sacrifice, focus and effort. I think last season Samir Handanovic performed miracles and I hope he can continue that, but the team has the right characteristics to be more solid than we are right now.

“Ever Banega has quality and it’s normal to expect important moments from quality players. We have a lot of them and therefore many chances of getting that turning point.

“Felipe Melo has experience, character and has done well when called upon.”

Genoa have already beaten Milan and Juventus, so appear to raise their game against the big clubs.

“Ivan Juric is doing a great job, Genoa are always organised and determined, so we need to match them in those terms. They have the second best defensive record in Serie A, so we must be well-prepared.

“I think it’d be a mistake to look at the past or the future too much. We must focus on the present and getting three points under our belts tomorrow night, only then can we think about the following fixtures.

“At this moment we have to accept all the criticism that comes our way. The fans expressed their disappointment that we did not honour the European tournament, but we still have objectives and it’s our duty to work every day in order to get closer to those targets.

“Our fans do not expect words from us, but action, which is what we intend to give them. If all the players don’t sacrifice themselves, then we’ll go nowhere. It is part of our work, our attitude and every player must sacrifice themselves for the team, working hard and running from start to finish.”

Inter have shown a tendency to start strong and then fall away as games go on, dropping leads and coming under pressure.

“The fitness levels are improving. When we got here, the squad was not in great shape, but decent. I think in this case it’s the psychological factor that makes the difference, as we must believe to the 95th minute that we will win.

“We’re on the right track, but a month cannot be sufficient to build a mentality. Tomorrow we must play with the right sharpness and determination. This squad has great potential and I think it’s time to get the best out of our resources.”
