Stefano Pioli admits Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s latest injury was a surprising setback, but that Ante Rebic is also struggling ahead of Milan’s trip to Sassuolo.

It kicks off on Sunday at 14.00 GMT and their lead at the top of the table has been cut to just one point after a pair of 2-2 draws with Parma and Genoa.

The bad news is that Ibrahimovic has been ruled out for another month by a soleus muscle strain.

“It was a strange day, as we were convinced he could recover in time to be in the squad tomorrow and even play a few minutes, then this happened,” said Pioli in his press conference.

“I am very disappointed for him, because he was so eager to return. He’ll be back stronger than ever and we have alternatives who can play. Ibrahimovic’s injury will not change our transfer strategy, although if there is an opportunity to improve the squad, I’m sure the club will evaluate it.”

However, Ante Rebic is not fully fit either, while Rafael Leao is also far from prolific.

“The plan remains to play attacking football. Rebic hasn’t scored lately, but only due to the opposition goalkeeper making great saves and some bad luck, but I am very satisfied with his contribution and movement. Leao struggled with that injury and spending so much time off the field can affect your tempo. His last few performances have not been up to standard.

“Rebic went off against Genoa on Wednesday because he had a problem with his foot. He’s been training separately over the last couple of days and I hope he’ll be ready for the final session.

“Simon Kjaer won’t be ready for tomorrow and it’s frankly unlikely he’ll play next Wednesday either, but he is in good shape and that’s the most important thing.”

This is a head-to-head for the top spot, because Sassuolo are in joint fifth place with Napoli, just five points off the leaders.

“We need a great performance against Sassuolo, as they are a team to be faced with a very clear head,” continued Pioli.

“The team won’t suffer from Ibrahimovic’s injury, because it is a side that always attacks and creates chances anyway. It is a squad with quality throughout.

“The fact we score with so many different players is positive, as it means we’re unpredictable. Sassuolo are a side to be approached with caution, as they are well-drilled. We must show respect, but also be aware of our own strengths.”
