Stefano Pioli trusts Milan are more of a force in Europe than last season and prepared for RB Salzburg. ‘In the Champions League, every ball could be decisive.’

It kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

The Rossoneri finished bottom of their group last season, their first return to the Champions League for seven years, but this time were top seeds thanks to their Serie A title victory.

“We should be stronger than last season, but as always the field will be the judge. We arrive in good form, aware of the difficulties, because Salzburg play quick, quality football, but we’re aware of our own strengths too,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

Milan remain by far the most successful Italian side in the history of the Champions League, winning it seven times, most recently in 2007.

It is a very different team, though, on average one of the youngest in the group stage of this tournament.

“It’s the Champions League, the home of Milan, so being here is always a source of pride. The players are emotional, but honestly I am still surprised by how calm, determined and focused they are,” added the coach.

“We will give our best, play with our own ideas and concepts, and must show quality, because in the Champions League every ball could be decisive.”
