The Biancocelesti finished third last season, securing qualification for the Champions League, but are currently languishing in ninth-place in Serie A.

“We had initial difficulties, I didn’t expect a summer like that,” Pioli admitted in his Press conference ahead of the Genoa game.

“We knew what we had to do, we knew our objevtives, I didn’t expect to go into the first game of the League season without winning.

“After that we had too many injuries, which you can’t ignore. We got them back, but unfortunately by then it was November.

“We’re summing-up too early though, the campaign isn’t over. Europe is difficult, but as long as it’s not mathematically certain we must believe in our objective.

“We’re behind what we wanted to do and what we have to do. It's useless to look back now, we’re paying dearly for November and December.

“In our last 11 we’ve lost two games against the strongest in Italy. We have to do well from now until the end, starting tomorrow.

“The season isn’t over yet. I’ll pull back and make assessments at the end. If we were to win something what would you say then?”

The Aquile face Genoa tomorrow, having lost 2-0 at home to Napoli in midweek.

“Getting back on the pitch right away can only be a good thing. Genoa play physical, aggressive football but we want to recover.

“In the last period we’ve done things right, we’ve proved our level. Genoa have signed new players, so we don’t know who will play tomorrow.

“Galatasaray? Our next commitments are in the League. We have Genoa then Verona, after that the Europa League.

“We have to give our all.”
