Former Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta sees similarities between himself and Lorenzo Pellegrini. “He has versatility in his blood.”

Perrotta was known for his ability to play anywhere in midfield but found himself playing as a No 10 during Italy’s World Cup conquest in 2006, and he credited his niche to ‘genius’ then-Roma boss Luciano Spalletti.

“Lorenzo is a very good player,” he told Corriere dello Sport after the starlet’s back-heeled goal against Lazio on Saturday.

“He’s already mature, despite his young age. He can play in Cristante’s role. He’s another player who has versatility in his blood.

“The credit belonged to Roma for making the most of my characteristics. Teams never knew whether to mark me or Totti.
