Ivan Perisic revealed that Tottenham first approached him in March and he reflected on his new life as a wing back under Antonio Conte.

The 33-year-old Croatian joined Spurs on a free transfer last month after his contract expired with Inter, ending a seven-year tie to the Nerazzurri. Conte transformed Perisic from an attacking winger into a wing back to great success, helping re-invent the player.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Perisic first discussed Tottenham’s initial approach and his desire to move to the Premier League.

“I think our first contact was in March, and the second one was in April when I think they won against Arsenal, and it was obvious that maybe they’re going to reach the Champions League.

“I always wanted to play in the Champions League and my wish was also to try to come to the Premier League.

“When they reached the Champions League, we spoke and the deal was done in two days, and it was much easier.”

The 33-year-old Croatian wing back then spoke about how his role changed under Conte.

“With him, I changed my position and he likes to play with three at the back,” he says. “At Inter we used to play with 3-5-2 and I was on the left as a wing-back.

“In the beginning I needed a few games to adapt. It’s really something new after so many years as a winger, but I think later I did well.

“Especially also last season with Inzaghi, because we kept playing the same tactic and now also here we’re going to try to play a similar system.

“I like to play in this position because I have more contacts with the ball than as a winger and most of the time I’m facing the goal – and I also like to help the defence.

“I think it’s the perfect position for me.”

During his seven years contracted to Inter, Perisic made 252 appearances across all competitions, helping the side win a Supercoppa Italiana, a Coppa Italia and a Scudetto. He scored 55 goals and provided 49 assists in that time, impressing as both a winger and a wing back.
