The focus would have switched from replacing Gianluigi Buffon to a backup for the Pole, and Agresti explains Marchetti is an idea that has been weighed up ‘for several weeks’.

The 35-year-old has fallen behind Thomas Strakosha in Lazio’s goalkeeping pecking order but kept goal for Italy in Buffon’s absence at the 2010 World Cup and played under Max Allegri at Cagliari.

However, the Bianconeri would also be tracking Perin, with the website claiming contact has already been established between themselves and Genoa.

In response to the Old Lady’s interest, the Grifone are understood to have enquired about Emil Audero, who has helped Venezia reach the promotion playoffs in Serie B this season.

Perin is also thought to be valued at €20m, although it is not clear whether that fee reflects Audero being included in any deal.
