The Nazionale were defeated 2-0 in Friday’s friendly against Argentina, their first match since failure to qualify for this summer’s World Cup.

Speaking at a Press conference as the Nazionale begin preparations for Tuesday’s game with England, the Roma man added his side will need to be patient if they are to turn their fortunes around.

“We all want to go again and make a statement, even though we know it isn’t easy,” Pellegrini began.

“It doesn’t happen in one day, but hard work always pays off.

“We’ve had enough of thinking about what happened against Sweden [in the World Cup play-off]. We don’t have a mental block.

“We are strong. All we need to do is form a group and grow together. We have to do it for ourselves, for Italy and for pride.

“We are fed up of seeing other teams win. Unfortunately we have a lot of time ahead of us [before competitive matches], but we have to take advantage of it.”

Pellegrini backed interim Azzurri Coach Luigi di Biagio and goalkeeper Gigi Buffon.

“The boss has the desire to show his and our qualities.

“Gigi is a true captain, he gives you calmness and he helps you at any moment.”
