Benevento President Oreste Vigorito insists his club will not exist in Serie A just to make up the numbers after their historic promotion on Thursday.
Benevento beat Carpi 1-0 in the Serie B playoffs to reach the Italian top flight for the first time in their history, and the President hailed the southerners for displaying “maybe more heart” than Juventus pair Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala.
“It was a promise made by two people, born as brothers by chance and who became friends by force,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“[Deceased co-owner and brother] Ciro and I said that we’d always try, and now we’ve got here.
“We did well in choosing our Coach, he’s been great. His CV said so and he showed it on the pitch.
“We did well not to get carried away when we were playing the best football in Serie B or drop our heads.
“Our Coach is and will remain Baroni, there’s never been doubt, neither when he was flying nor when he landed.
“These players aren’t Higuain and Dybala, but they have big hearts like them, maybe even more so.
“Serie A? You don’t get here to go back, we prefer to stay in paradise.”
