On this day 10 years ago, Inter became the first Italian team to ever win the Treble, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League Final.

With the 2009-10 Serie A and Coppa Italia already tied up, Inter returned to Spain just weeks after they battled to a 3-2 aggregate victory over Barcelona.

Facing them at the Santiago Bernabeu were a Bayern side who were eyeing up a Treble of their own, having too won a domestic double that season.

Thiago Motta missed the Final due to serving a suspension for his farcical red card against Barca, but the Germans were without Franck Ribery.

Although Jose Mourinho’s troops had less possession, their counterattacking tactics worked a treat, with Diego Milito scoring either side of half-time.

Wesley Sneijder fed Milito from a long ball and the former Argentina striker slotted past Hans-Jorg Butt for his first goal of the evening.

He then stole the show with his second, keeping his composure as he approached the Bayern box before crisply curling home for 2-0.

Milito was soon replaced by Marco Materazzi to a standing ovation, which then became wild celebration, with the Nerazzurri crowned European champions for the first time since 1965.

Mourinho stayed in the Spanish capital, taking charge of Real Madrid six days later to pursue his dream of becoming the first coach to win the Champions League with three different clubs.

Neither him nor Inter have come close to revisiting their heady heights of a decade ago, although the Beneamata remain the only Italian club to have the distinction of winning all three major trophies in one season.

Juventus almost emulated them as they reached the Champions League Final in 2017, but they were thrashed 4-1 by a Madrid team led by Bianconeri heroes Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo.
