Claudio Marchisio’s season is over after the midfielder suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Italy training this morning.
It was announced earlier today that the midfielder would not be fit for the Azzurri’s trip to Sofia for a Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday, with fears that the injury was serious.
In a blow for the national team and for his club, Juventus, the FIGC has now confirmed that the 29-year-old has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee.

In a blow for the national team and for his club, Juventus, the FIGC has now confirmed that the 29-year-old has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee.
“During the warm-up the player was believed to be suffering from just a sprain to his right knee,” Italy doctor Enrico Castellacci said in a statement released by the Italian FA.
“An MRI scan was performed immediately at the Fanfani Institute in Florence, which showed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament.
“After consulting with the medical staff of Juventus, it was decided that the player will return to his club for treatment.”
With an ACL injury usually meaning at least six months on the sidelines, Marchisio’s season is almost certainly over.
The news is a major blow for the Bianconeri, who are already without Paul Pogba for next month’s Champions League Quarter Final with Monaco.
