Doctor Andrea Causarano has admitted that Roma star Nicolò Zaniolo will be the key to his own rehabilitation and revealed “the surgery was perfectly successful”.

The starlet ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament and damaged the meniscus during the 2-1 defeat to Juventus and went through an intervention yesterday.

Giallorossi's head of medical department Causarano said the 20-year-old had been exemplary during the operation and said he was calmed by “the certainty of being able to return” to the pitch.

“We were together with Nicolò all day,” he told the club’s official radio station. “He faced the intervention with serenity, despite his young age.

“The operation was perfectly successful. Professor Mariani rebuilt his anterior ligament. He was surrounded by loved ones and he felt protected.

“Also, from the certainty of being able to return to play.”

The Giallorossi have had a nasty relationship with knee injuries in recent years, but Causarano revealed everyone reacts differently to the rehabilitation.

“From today, Zaniolo will begin the first stage of his rehabilitation,” he added. “To allow the joint resume normal activity.

“The rehabilitation doesn’t have a precise time scale, they are personalised. We will evaluate the steps during his rehab. It’s impossible to put a time scale on the recovery. We will act in the best possible way, at the interest of his health.

“Nicolò hasn’t had any previous problems in his knee. It has always been a healthy joint. Against Torino he had a bruise above the knee and trained without any problems.

“We continue in the bitterness of the injury and we’re confident that he will return stronger than ever.”

It’s feared that Zaniolo will miss Euro 2020 because of the injury, as he is expected to be out for five to six months.
