The mayor of Milan is “pessimistic” about the chances of Inter or Milan building a new stadium, and says they should concentrate on San Siro.

The Rossoneri had a plan to build a new ground in the Portello area of the city, but it collapsed as costs were higher than originally thought.

That led to the Nerazzurri considering moving out of San Siro, but the city’s mayor says both clubs should work on improving San Siro.

That led to the Nerazzurri considering moving out of San Siro, but the city’s mayor says both clubs should work on improving San Siro.

“I’m pessimistic about the chances of another stadium,” Giuseppe Sala admitted in an interview with Sky.

“I don’t think the two clubs want to bear an investment like that. San Siro is the stadium where, together, the teams have won more trophies than at any other stadium in the world – I’d think well about it before giving it up.

“What doesn’t work is changing the scenery week-by-week, depending on which team is playing at home. It’s not right.

“The stadium should be divided a little, with two separate entrances, two hospitality boxes, two Press rooms.

“The place needs a bit of money spent on it, but not as much as building a new stadium.”

The mayor is an Inter fan, and was asked about Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina.

“I suffer enough, I can hardly watch at San Siro. I’ll watch it at a friend’s house, we at Inter have to recover. I’ll go for 2-2.”
