The Grifone hadn’t won the Derby della Lanterna in four years, but emerged victorious thanks to a Domenico Criscito penalty and Lukas Lerager strike.

“Compared to the game with Napoli, and missing a lot of players who had been regulars, like Adama Soumaoro, Stefano Sturaro, Francesco Cassata and Valon Behrami, we had to take a different approach to the way we occupied the space,” explained Nicola in his press conference.

“It all has to change based on the characteristics of our players and also the opponent that we are facing.”

Samp coach Ranieri said that the Blucerchiati ‘tip our hat’ to Genoa for ‘deservedly’ winning the derby.

“I thank Claudio for his fair play, because as always, he proved himself to be a real football man by recognising the merits of the opposition.

“In turn, I recognise that we were up against a tough and determined Sampdoria, but we were up to the task.”
