Gianluigi Donnarumma 6.5 – Made big saves when he needed to, including one using his crotch, but every time he plays out from the back remains nerve-wracking.

Rafael Toloi 6 – Struggled more as the game wore on and the Netherlands threw on more strikers.

Alessandro Buongiorno 7.5 – One of Italy’s best players on the day, remarkable considering it’s his debut and he usually plays in a three-man defence at Torino. Definitely one to watch for the future.

Francesco Acerbi 6.5 – People keep citing him as a defender who needs to be retired, but this season at Inter and for Italy he’s been excellent at keeping dangerous strikers quiet.

Federico Dimarco 7 – A splendid goal with that trusty left foot, several good crosses and tracked back regularly in defence. Tired as the game wore on, without the traditional Inter substitution after 65 minutes. (74’ Spinazzola 5.5 – By the time he came on, mostly defending)

Davide Frattesi 7.5 – Unlucky to have a goal disallowed against Spain, almost had this one chalked off too, but the Sassuolo midfielder is industrious, hard-working and always a threat with his well-timed runs from midfield.

Bryan Cristante 6 – Tried to keep the midfield balanced, had some good through balls.

Marco Verratti 5.5 – You can tell why he didn’t start against Spain, as he was dismal off the bench and not a vast improvement here either. Somehow avoided getting booked for persistent fouling, would often follow one good move with a completely misplaced pass. (85’ Barella 5.5 – Despite barely being on the pitch, still managed to get booked)

Giacomo Raspadori 6.5 – Provided the smart back-heel assist for the Dimarco goal and put himself about in attack. A worker. (63’ Chiesa 7.0 – Scored a goal from a tricky angle, his first in two years, threatened several more times and generally woke up his teammates).

Mateo Retegui 5.5 – So often nearly on the end of dangerous crosses, but not quite. Needs to improve the timing of his runs and be quicker to react. (85’ Pellegrini 3.5 – Had one glorious chance to score after a five against two counter, scuffed it horribly wide. We can only hope there was a divot)

Wilfried Gnonto 5 – Barely saw the ball, was told off at different times for being too wide or not wide enough, this was a wasted opportunity for the Leeds teenager. (63’ Zaniolo 6.5 – Aggressive, tried to get Italy back to attacking rather than being under siege, Pellegrini should’ve scored on his counter).

Netherlands: Bijlow 5.5, Dumfries 4.5, Geertruida 6 (46’ Wijnaldum 6), Van Dijk 5, Ake 5.5, Wieffer (76’ Veerman 7), De Jong 5.5, Simons 7 (63’ Koopmeiners 6), Malen 4.5 (Bergwijn 7.5), Gakpo 5.5, Lang 4.5 (46’ Weghorst 5)
