Roma effectively ruined Inter’s plans by signing Dzeko to a contract extension on Friday evening, meaning not only that the Nerazzurri cannot get their preferred target, but also that the options for Icardi are now even more limited.

With Beppe Marotta not prepared to sell the Argentine to Juventus unless in an exchange with Paulo Dybala, Napoli can now go full steam ahead in convincing the striker that they are the best alternative.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, that includes several players bombarding Icardi with phone calls urging him to come to the Stadio San Paolo.

Meanwhile, President Aurelio De Laurentiis has stepped up talks with Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara.

Tuttosport claim the patron is even prepared to share some of the image rights with the player rather than insist on purchasing them all.

Essentially, Icardi would be allowed to keep some of his image rights, while sharing the profits from the long-term contract with Nike.

Inter would prefer to sell their hitman to Napoli rather than Juventus and want €70m, but could be convinced in the circumstances to accept €60m plus various bonuses and add-ons.

There is another option, which would be to send Arkadiusz Milik to Inter plus a small cash sum.

Meanwhile, Icardi is being painted into a corner, because the Corriere dello Sport suggests Inter lawyers are ignoring his letter of protest at being frozen out of the squad.

The club saw the potential legal action coming and took specific steps to ensure the player is allowed to train, but simply not picked for games.
