According to multiple reports in Italy, Dries Mertens is ready to give up €2m wages to extend his contract with Napoli.

The Belgium international’s contract at the Stadio Maradona runs out on June 30. He seemed ready to leave the club after failing to agree on a new deal with the Partenopei.

“I don’t know yet where I will play next season, if it’s at Napoli or some other club,” Mertens told HLN Sport last week.

“I hope to stay at Napoli, but I can’t say any more than that. Obviously, I hope to stay, but I haven’t received any offers, so we’ll have to see.”

According to Sportmediaset, Mertens had demanded a €2m-a-year deal for two seasons and €4m add-ons. Napoli are not open to matching his requests, so the player seems to have changed his mind and is now ready to give up €2m, according to Sportmediaset and Il Mattino newspaper.

Mertens has become the best scorer in the club’s history, with 148 goals in 397 appearances with the Partenopei. He joined the club for €9.5m from PSV in 2013.
