Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is overjoyed with the work of coach Luciano Spalletti and does not want to lose him next summer when his contract expires.

The 63-year-old Italian coach joined the Partenopei in July of last year, replacing the departed Gennaro Gattuso.

In his first season in the Campania capital, Spalletti kept Napoli in the title race alongside Inter and Milan for a large part of the season, eventually tailing off in the second half of the campaign. This year Napoli are top of the table and look to be one of the most exciting sides in Europe.

As reported by Il Mattino, Spalletti’s current contract expires with Napoli in June of next year but it contains a unilateral extension clause that has to be triggered by May. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has every intention to activate this clause, placing his trust in the Italian coach.

The two will still have to meet to confirm the agreement and there’s no guarantees that this’ll take place during the World Cup break, but regardless it’s clear what the intention is in the Campania capital.
