The Nerazzurri had to win in order to retain third place, as Atalanta, Milan, Roma, Torino and Lazio all won at the weekend, and got a 2-0 result.

“Everyone behind us had won, so that puts some pressure on. Even when relegated, Chievo wanted to prove something against Inter and that’s normal,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

“They caused us problems, we had to win and it didn’t matter if it was beautiful or ugly, just as long as we got the three points.

“Nobody can say they are sure until it is mathematically guaranteed. It’s going to be tough, as we have Napoli next week and in the end Empoli are fighting it out to avoid relegation, so everyone is highly-motivated.

“I am happy to be playing consistently now and to be free of injuries. I hope that continues going into next season.”

Nainggolan was asked how the team manages to isolate itself from the endless speculation on Coach Luciano Spalletti.

“We have always given our all, as did the Coach. There is criticism, that’s part of football, but at this moment I feel Inter are doing better than last season and hopefully the fans will be satisfied at being in the Champions League for another year.”
