Radja Nainggolan said he stayed because “it’s better to win one trophy at Roma than 10 at Juventus.”

The midfielder recently completed the transfer outright after he arrived in a co-ownership deal from Cagliari.

“I never had any doubts, as I wanted to stay at Roma,” he told reporters during their pre-season tour in Indonesia.

“I also had many offers two seasons ago, but I opted for Roma. The first 18 months went well and I believe in this project.

“I also had many offers two seasons ago, but I opted for Roma. The first 18 months went well and I believe in this project.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to go into a star-studded team to win a trophy. I am in a great side and I want to win with the Giallorossi.

“For me it’s better to win one trophy at Roma than 10 at Juventus. I wanted to stay, so I am happy. When I first arrived here, I considered it an interesting project and I still believe in it now.

“I extended my contract by five years and am very happy, as it means the club has faith in me. I hope to repay them with my best performances and to win something as soon as possible.”

The fans gave Roma an immensely passionate welcome in Jakarta, but naturally it was a special visit for Nainggolan, whose father is Indonesian.

“I am bonded to this country and it is always pleasing to feel the affection of the Indonesian fans. It is an honour for me to help grow Indonesian pride in Europe.”
