Jose Mourinho accused Monza staff of ‘putting on a show’ during their Serie A match, but the Roma coach got himself sent off for a childish gesture and then mocked Papu Gomez’s doping ban.

The Special One had already engaged in an ugly row with Monza boss Raffaele Palladino and his staff last season.

While Palladino today tried to calm the controversy, Mourinho ramped it up even further, receiving a red card for doing a ‘boo-hoo crying’ gesture towards Palladino and the fourth official.

He then complained to Sky Sport Italia that it was the Monza staff who were “putting on a show” on the touchline and “trying to pressure the referee” after spending half the match down to 10 men.

This dismissal means Mou will be suspended from the touchline for the return to San Siro against his old club Inter.

In his press conference afterwards, Mourinho was also asked about news new Monza signing Papu Gomez received a two-year doping ban.

Gomez insists it was accidental after ingesting a spoonful of his son’s cough syrup, but it does raise serious questions that he apparently failed the doping test in November 2022 and yet the ban was only activated this week.

It is particularly concerning, as Roma lost the Europa League Final to Gomez’s Sevilla in May.

“Gomez did not play in the Europa League Final, I think he did play against Juventus after getting a positive result. In any case, I don’t want to talk about this. If I get a cough, then I won’t take that syrup, or else I will be in trouble too.”
