“Winning games is the priority and to win the games you need to score goals,” Mourinho told DAZN after a midweek home defeat in the Europa League to Real Betis.

“I see teams who don’t score goals because they don’t create the chances, but that is not our situation. We create lots of opportunities, but at this moment we struggle to convert and therefore to win.”

Belotti is chosen to lead the attack rather than Tammy Abraham, but Mourinho is eager to insist that’s not just waiting for goals from Il Gallo.

“Everyone is training well, I cannot say one is training better than anyone else. I want to give chances to different players, we have a small option to rotate from Europa League to Serie A. Belotti played about 20 minutes last time, so he’s fresh, can work hard and provide spaces for the others to attack as well, so it’s not just about putting responsibility on him to score goals.”

Pellegrini returns from injury and is in the starting XI in the deeper midfield role rather than Nemanja Matic.

“Lorenzo is a completely different player to Matic, he is closer to the forwards, more creative, whereas Nemanja is more about the position and balance.

“The only game when I really had a choice to make was against Inter, otherwise I am always missing one or more players in some area or other, so I have to adjust to the circumstances.”
