Jose Mourinho has avoided a suspension for the ‘harmful’ comments he recently made regarding referee Matteo Marcenaro after agreeing to a fine as part of a plea bargain with the FIGC according to Saturday morning’s reports.

Mourinho had warned that he was ‘worried’ about the referee during his press conference on the eve of Roma’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo at the beginning of December.

The FIGC confirmed via an official statement on Friday that Mourinho had accepted a fine of €40,000, which will be paid evenly by him personally and the club.

According to reports from TMW, Mourinho needed to explain himself in person in front of FIGC prosecutor Giuseppe Chine before being let off without a touchline ban.

There had been concerns that if Mourinho were to be suspended, he could have missed an important run of fixtures for the Giallorossi, who play Bologna, Napoli and Juventus across their next three matches.

Roma and Bologna are level on points heading into their meeting on Sunday, with Mourinho’s side currently occupying the fourth Champions League qualification spot.
