The former midfielder made quite an impact in his first major management role, winning on his debut against Brescia and then only losing to a stoppage-time penalty at Juventus when down to 10 men.

He now faces a relegation six-pointer with troubled Udinese, who fired their coach Igor Tudor this week.

“I expect a very tough match, as Udinese will give everything they have in this difficult moment and we’ve got to be prepared,” said Thiago Motta in his press conference.

“The Friulani aren’t just a physical side, as they also have experience and some quick strikers. Let’s not forget, up until a week ago, they had the best defensive record in the division. It’ll be like a Cup Final and we need that same Genoa mentality we saw before.

“It’s true the result in Turin was not positive, but the performance certainly was and it further boosted our confidence, both individually and as a team.”
