Emiliano Moretti has thanked Coach Giampiero Ventura and his Torino teammates after being called up to Antonio Conte’s latest Italy squad.

The Granata left-back could win his first cap for the Azzurri at the age of 33 after being given the call by the former Juve boss.

“It was a surprise, and very gratifying,” Moretti said to Sky of his call-up.

“I’ve just thanked my teammates and the Coach, because I think it’s all down to them. The national team is a dream for anyone.

“I thought I could achieve this goal when I was at Valencia, but now I’ve been selected and I’m happy.”

Moretti also discussed the Granata’s dwindling form, having been beaten by Helsinki and Roma in the space of four days.

“I’m happy to have been called up to the national team, but obviously I’m not happy with Torino’s results.

“We need to improve in terms of performance, but this happened last year – we started slowly and then showed what we can do.

“We just need time.”
