Massimo Moratti has reignited the rivalry between Inter and Juventus by suggesting “maybe VAR would’ve helped in 1998”.

Inter lost 1-0 to Juve in April 1998, which played a key role in the Bianconeri’s Scudetto success that year, but Moratti believes Ronaldo would have been awarded a penalty after he was bodychecked by Mark Iuliano in the box.

“VAR? I still need to understand it all the way,” the former Nerazzurri President said at Italy’s coaching school of Coverciano.

“Maybe it takes some emotion away from matches and the fans because it offers extreme security, but maybe during Juve-Inter in 1998, it would’ve helped, but it went how it did.

“I’m not surprised by Spalletti’s results, even if Inter are a difficult club to manage. He’s a good lad, he has experience and he wants to win.

“Transfer campaign? It was one that made sense. We just have to figure out if we have enough players in defence.

“There will be reasons why Inter haven’t spent too much. Maybe it was down to the Chinese restrictions, maybe it was FFP, which was also the case when I was President and fan, but it’s certainly not easy to comply with it.

“The loopholes to get around it will always be there. I’d say that PSG have found them.

“It’s still early days, but I think Inter have a good Coach, the makings of a good club and good players.

“You can hope. Juve started badly last season, but they have character and a great Coach. They lost Bonucci but have a great attack. Sometimes we get too carried away, but they’re still a good team.

“My future? I can absolutely rule out a return to football. Inter have what it takes to get back to winning under Spalletti.”
