Former Juventus striker Alvaro Morata believes Angel Di Maria is the ‘most underrated’ star of the decade and reveals he called Paul Pogba after his injury against Cremonese.

The Spaniard spoke to Tuttosport on the eve of a Europa League semifinal second leg between Juventus and Sevilla.

“I’ll support Juventus, of course. I’d support Sevilla in any other case, but not against my ex-club,” said Morata.

“Juventus have a lot of motivations, including winning for Pogba. Paul is a formidable player, I know him well, we are friends and I called him immediately after his injury against Cremonese. He was frustrated but is already focused on his recovery,” the ex-Bianconeri striker continued.

“He will return as soon as possible at his level, worthy of one of the best midfielders in the world. He is a leader in all aspects, in games and training, he’s an example for everyone.”

The Frenchman suffered a muscle injury during a 2-0 win over Cremoense on Sunday, in his first match as a starter this season. It means that 2022-23 is already over for him as it will take more than 20 days to return to action.

Pogba and Morata are close friends and spent two seasons together at Juventus, winning two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia and two Supercups.

With Pogba out, which stars can help Juve beat Sevilla and qualify for the Europa League Final?

“There are many,” said Morata.

“I played with Di Maria in the past, he’s a champion and has recently won the World Cup with Argentina. He’s the most underrated player in the last decade.”

Dusan Vlahovic is expected to start but is having a tough season in Turin, with only 13 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.

“I played with him last season and I respect him,” admitted Morata.

“He is young but has a strong character. He wants to do well at Juventus and I believe he’s been unfairly criticised. He’s been struggling with injuries this season, but his qualities are unquestionable.”

The Spaniard has a year left in his contract with Atletico Madrid but has been linked to a summer move to Milan.

“I’ve heard nothing about this. I have a contract until June 2024 and my agent has not informed me. At least for now.

“Then you know how football works, if there is a favourable situation, then something could be unlocked, but at the moment, I know nothing about it.”
