Monza announced that veteran defender Andrea Ranocchia has sprained his ankle and sustained a fracture to the fibula.

There were immediately fears for the worst when the 34-year-old slipped and seemed to catch his ankle during yesterday’s 4-0 Serie A defeat to Napoli.

He was stretchered off in evident agony and today the X-Rays confirmed the initial diagnosis.

Ranocchia has both sprained his ankle and sustained a fracture to the fibula.

The former Inter defender released a picture of himself with his leg in plaster, confirming this is going to be a very long lay-off.

“Fighting! Thank you to everyone for your messages. I can only tell you that I’ll be back soon.”

It is the third major fracture sustained by a Serie A player this weekend after Roma’s Georginio Wijnaldum and Atalanta defender Berit Djimsiti.
