Vincenzo Montella enjoyed the derby win, but joked that Maxi Lopez was weeping “because he’ll have to stay in Catania!”

The Elefantini beat local rivals Palermo 2-0 this afternoon and Milan transfer target Lopez cried as he went off, saluting the crowd and every member of the bench.

“Was Maxi crying because it was his last game here? I think he was crying because he’ll have to stay in Catania and fight for his place!” smiled Montella.

“He didn’t play earlier this season because there were others who gave me greater guarantees. In recent weeks Maxi has trained with more intensity and calm, earning himself a place in the starting XI.

“In my view, he can play in a top tier club. I don’t know if he will actually leave, because that is down to Catania and you never know what can happen on the transfer market.”

The Coach also commented on today’s impressive victory over Sicilian derby rivals Palermo.

“Catania were superior during the match. The points take us to a position that suits our level, after two undeserved defeats. We played with great intensity and had more chances than we actually scored.”
