Vincenzo Montella claims he failed at Milan because ‘our players had never won things’ and that the club ‘should’ve been more patient.’

Montella was sacked by Milan at the tail end of last year after a poor run of results, despite a €200m recruitment drive before the season started, and the Coach – who has since taken over Sevilla – looked back on his time at San Siro.

“We’re also paid to be scapegoats,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

“I did the best I could, making some mistakes. There were about 10 new players coming from other Leagues, many of them without international experience.

“Some were expecting immediate results, but our players had never won things and therefore it took some time for them to adapt.

“I think we should’ve been more patient. I even said this with our board members. We hoped to start well so we’d get some confidence.

“Milan in the Champions League? I don’t know, I’m not really following Serie A, but they’re coming back strongly, also because Inter and Lazio are both slowing down in front of them. They’re in the Champions League race.

“Donnarumma? Gigio is a very balanced person. He’s experiencing something great and I think that because of his ability, he’s not forgiven when he makes minor mistakes.

“I think he’ll make the most of his potential. Will Reina force him out? I believe any great team have a duty to have two top goalkeepers on their books.

“Three-man defence? It’s a question of time and adaptation for new players who come from other Leagues.

“The formation has nothing to do with it. We played the way we did to make things easier [for the new players].

“Andre Silva? He was very young when he arrived, and now he’s showing his potential.

“Sometimes players are only judged by their price, but for strikers who come from abroad, everything is more complicated and their adaptation is slower.”
