Catania boss Vincenzo Montella insists Maxi Lopez is good enough to join an Italian giant – even though he’s struggling to command a starting shirt in Sicily.

The Argentine is being paired with a January switch to Milan as cover for the currently sidelined Antonio Cassano.

“Maxi Lopez has played for Barcelona,” boss Montella told the Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday.

“He may be suffering right now at Catania, but he’s an important attacker and is a player worthy of a great outfit.

“After all, he was already close to joining a big team during the summer.”

It’s understood that Lopez, who was netted by the Italian outfit in January 2010, would have signed for Fiorentina had they sold Alberto Gilardino to Genoa.

Lopez has only started five of Catania’s 10 League games so far this term. He’s scored two goals in 514 minutes of Serie A action.
