Giampiero Boniperti has backed Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella to take control of the Italian national side at some stage in the future.

“I hope you take the helm of the national team one day as you deserve it,” the Juventus” data-scaytid=”7″>Juventus legend said to Montella at an awards ceremony in Rome on Thursday.

“Montella has proven to be a good guy and a very prepared tactician,” continued the 85-year-old.

“For such an honest and fair man, who is attached to the true values of football, I’d like him to be handed the Italy job.”

The 38-year-old is one of Serie A’s most promising tacticians after being given his first top-flight job by Roma in February 2011.

At the end of the season he joined Catania and became Fiorentina boss last summer.

The former Empoli” data-scaytid=”16″>Empoli, Sampdoria” data-scaytid=”17″>Sampdoria and Roma striker led the Viola to fourth place in Serie A this term, just missing out on the final Champions League spot to Milan.
