La Viola lost 1-0 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani and they have now gone 11 games in a row without a victory, their worst winless run since the 1989-1990 season.

The former Milan tactician spoke to media outlet DAZN after the game.

“I am angry about the result, the team is struggling, but there are certain situations that aren’t going our way.

“We created so many chances again today, but once more we are missing that calmness in front of goal. The team held together, but when you don’t take your chances, you get punished.

“Federico Chiesa wasn’t 100% and had to start from the bench, he had a fever. I’ll have to analyse the whole game in general and look at the bigger picture.

“The boys are in a bit of emotional difficulty at the moment, but I can’t fault their effort today.”

French midfielder Jordan Veretout was sent off after the final whistle for insulting referee Massimiliano Irrati and could now face a two-game ban which would effectively end his season early.

“I didn’t see what happened, I went up to shake hands with the ref at the end of the game. I think Veretout was angry for not getting a free kick at the end and he was very tense. I didn’t see anything, so I don’t want to judge right now."

Montella was also quick to play down the idea of sending his team into a training retreat for the rest of the season.

“I don’t believe in sending the players into a ‘ritiro’. Years ago we would all be together playing cards or billiards, but today it would be counter-productive, as the players now would just spend time on their own.”
