“I’m proud of my players,” the 65-year-old tactician told Lady Radio after the match.

“We had set ourselves the task of not thinking about our league position and to just concentrate on giving the fans something to sing about.

“We wanted to put in a great performance as we often do, but sometimes we fail to take advantage of playing a good game and leave without any points.

“This win will give us a much-needed boost going into next weekend’s game. I asked the boys to keep fighting until the final whistle and I wanted us to defend with the ball this time.

“In other games when we took the lead, we were not able to hold onto it and I didn’t want us to give away cheap possession.

“I was afraid of the state of the pitch and the weather, but it didn’t seem to affect the players, they were switched on from the start. They had the belief that would win today in their heads.

“We defended well and kept a clean sheet, thanks in part to Matias Silvestre’s inclusion, who was an injury doubt during the week.

“His experience and leadership helped us today, while our keeper Bartlomiej Dragowski saved us on a couple of occasions. Alban Lafont saved Fiorentina from going two goals down, too.”
