“It’s true that we must be making mistakes to have 16 points in Serie A, but we’ve got to forget about that tournament right now and focus on the Champions League, where the team is doing well.

“I expect us to have the right mentality and approach this evening.”

The Giallorossi have had some summer signings settle in immediately, but others like Justin Kluivert and Bryan Cristante are struggling.

“Not everyone settles in to a new situation at the same pace. It can take more time for others. Justin Kluivert had an injury that slowed his progress and it’s not easy to adapt to Italian football.

“Bryan Cristante had a great season with Atalanta, but the level steps up at Roma and he needs to get used to that.

“I have absolute faith in these players, as I’ve seen some like Ivan Rakitic immediately deliver at Barcelona, while others like Jordi Alba needed a year to adapt fully.

“We have a Coach who is not afraid to pick young players and give them their debuts, so hopefully we’ll see some of the Primavera players step up by the end of the season.”

Paulo Sousa’s agent openly asked for the Roma job this week, so Monchi publicly backed Di Francesco again.

“I think Eusebio is doing a great job, because Roma are a club where you need a Coach with character and he has that. Since the day we hired Di Francesco, I never expected anything different to what we’re seeing.”
