Henrikh Mkhitaryan admits he feels ‘guilty’ over a wasted opportunity in Inter’s defeat to Fiorentina, but argues the misses are because they ‘want it too much.’

The Nerazzurri fell to their third consecutive Serie A defeat and are sliding down the standings with even third place now at risk.

“I think the only thing we are missing is goals. We haven’t scored in three games and once again tonight we could’ve scored three or four in the first half alone to finish the game,” Mkhitaryan told DAZN.

“Instead, we didn’t get it into the net and I feel guilty for not converting my chance.”

The Armenia international had burst past two tackles to force a save from Pietro Terracciano and then hit the side-netting on the rebound.

“I haven’t seen it again on the monitor, but I played it back in my mind. I spoke to Lukaku too, I could’ve passed it to him, but I was in a good position and concentrated on going for goal.”

Romelu Lukaku missed two remarkable sitters, including an open goal from three yards out where he barely made contact with the ball, while Nicolò Barella and Fiorentina’s Gaetano Castrovilli thumped the woodwork.

The match was ultimately decided by a Giacomo Bonaventura header from close range, on the rebound from Andre Onana’s save on Arthur Cabral.

“It’s not just about determination, we also need to be calm and focused in front of goal. We need to have clear minds. We know that we’re not scoring goals and that something is not working.

“I think it’s because we want it too much, so we are tense when the time comes to shoot. There is too much adrenaline for that moment.”

Inter still have a lot to play for, especially in April, as they will face Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-final and Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final.
