Despite the player’s declaration that he wants to stay at Inter, Milan are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

The Brazilian shot-stopper’s future in the blue half of the city was thrown in doubt yesterday when the Nerazzurri’s move for Udinese No 1 Samir Handanovic was confirmed.

Agreeing to pay a reported €11m to the Zebrette plus hand over 50 per cent of Davide Faraoni’s registration, Inter look set to complete a deal for the 27-year-old today, when it is expected that the Slovenian will arrive to undergo a medical and formalise contract negotiations.

Cesar was initially paired with a surprise move to cross-town rivals early yesterday in response to the first whispers of Handanovic’s deal, but ceremoniously declared last night that he intends to stay with Inter to fight for his place.

However, the Corriere dello Sport believe that Cesar, who has spent the past seven seasons on the books at Inter, has already held initial talks with the Rossoneri.

Adriano Galliani is believed to have held discussions on a possible contract for the ‘keeper either with the player himself or one of his close representatives.

In the market for a replacement for Marco Amelia and Christian Abbiati, Milan are thought to be hoping for a similar situation to that which Juventus benefited from when signing Lucio this week – that Inter will rescind Cesar’s contract, removing the need for a transfer fee for the Diavolo and their tight budget.
