Liverpool have secured top spot in their Champions League group with two games to spare, also keeping Milan’s hopes alive, even if their chances are very slim.

The Rossoneri were held 1-1 at home by FC Porto this evening, giving them just one point from four matches.

However, they aren’t entirely out of the running yet for qualification into the Round of 16.

It will take something spectacular, but it wouldn’t be the first time, as Atalanta had one point after four games and still got through two years ago.

Liverpool have already guaranteed top spot in Group B with 12 points from four games, followed by FC Porto on five, Atletico Madrid with four and Milan on one.

The Rossoneri’s remaining fixtures are a trip to Atletico Madrid on November 24 and hosting a Liverpool side who will probably rest numerous players at San Siro on December 7.

Porto already have a superior head-to-head record with Milan, so if Sergio Conceicao’s men beat Liverpool, it’s all over for the Rossoneri.

Essentially, Milan need to win both remaining games, hope Porto only get one point from two matches, and then get a superior head-to-head record with Atletico Madrid by winning at the Wanda Metropolitano by at least a two-goal margin.

It’s difficult, and third place for Europa League qualification might be more within reach, but not impossible.

16 thought on “Milan can still qualify for Champions League Last 16”
  1. The two-goal margin is only needed in case Atletico beat Porto. 2 wins for Milan and a draw between Porto and Atletico and Milan go through. Liverpool will beat Porto next matchday.

  2. pffffftt… hahahahaaha YOU HONESTLY THINK MILAN CAN WIN 2 GAMES WHEN THEY CANT EVEN WIN 1 IN 4 CHANCES ?!

WAKE UP. THEY ONLY HAVE JUST AS MUCH RIGHT AS MALMO BEING IN THE TOP ELITE CLUB COMPETITION.

  3. The two Porto games were really disappointing. We were good against Liverpool and unlucky against A Madrid but really blew it with Porto. The refereeing decisions haven’t helped but we needed to be better in these two games.

The A Madrid game is absolutely key as hopefully Liverpool have already so might put out a weaker side.

  4. Agreed, the Porto games weren’t good enough. Perhaps we can point to the missing players to some degree in the away game but this one we don’t really have any excuses, and we don’t help ourselves.

We don’t seem to understand that refereeing is different outside of Serie A, and we can’t expect to buy cheap fouls as easily – Theo and Benaccer have been very guilty of this, Tonali too. We could have conceded more tonight because of this and it cost us at the Dragao too.

We were extremely unlucky against Atleti but only have ourselves to blame in the last two.

  5. Milan should sell the remaining 2 games. Let them just focus on the Scudetto race. To hell the UCL! The UCL is only a distraction, that’s what happened to Milan with the Europa last season, and that cost Milan the Scudetto. The league should be our only priority this season. The UCL can wait for next time.

  6. @who me

Forgot to take your pills have we? Calm down and let the grown up speak. They cannot even one out of four games? No evidently no, misfortune, two bad games and horrendous referee took care of that

  7. If Milan can win at Atleti and beat Liverpool at home, it will have been a more than admirable first showing back in the champions league. Regardless of whether they finish in the top 2, go into europa league or finish 4th.

The 4 games have showcased, the best, worst as well as the inexperienced sides of this team….and the coach.

  8. Even as a cautiously optimistic Milan fan I still don’t think we’ll finish anywhere other than last. Had we taken the levels of the Liverpool and Atleti games into the Porto games we would’ve had 6 points but we just really didn’t have an answer to Porto which doesn’t put us in good standing because even if we were relegated to the Europa League we would still struggle against every team. Focus on the Coppa and winning the Scudetto. My hope is other Italian teams progress quite far in Europe, for the betterment of Italian football and to give Milan an edge in the Scudetto race.

  9. LOL the calculator again, I really miss it! Come on, Milan is already eliminated and honestly it is better to focus on Serie A. That made wonders for Inter last term, and if Inter qualify for the final 16 would be even better for Milan.

Now I have to say that 4 matches with terrible refereeing is too much. Both Porto goals should have been disallowed, but Europe is so corrupted that it is not even funny. Absolutely disgraceful

  10. Milan could still qualify and I could still play drums for The Beatles.

Serie A is all that matters. We were never getting out of that group.

  11. People saying the club doesn’t belong in the CL are just trolling or started watching football last season. Milan hasn’t been in the CL for 8 years. It is recovering from a deferred FFP agreement with UEFA. It has had multiple players out with injuries/Covid with an already thin squad. It has had to contend with very poor refereeing. Finally, Milan’s club coefficient is trash given the aforementioned 8 year absence, so it was in Pot 4. Did you seriously expect to be CL contenders or something? It’s absurd. It’s been a disappointing CL campaign, but the club is off to its best start in Serie A in its history. If we continue to perform well in the league and finish top 4 going forward the club will build up economically and the players will build up in experience. As they do, better players and a deeper bench will result. Where was PSG before they were bought by a sovereign wealth fund? It took many seasons and 100s of millions of Euros to become perennial semi-finalists. Regardless of what happens in the CL this season I’m already looking forward to next season when we’ll have funds from a second consecutive CL qualification to reinforce, and the experience of this ice-breaking first season back (and not be in a group of death).
