Milan boss Stefano Pioli believes Rafael Leao needs consistency to become ‘a champion’ and notes Nicolò Zaniolo’s development was ‘affected by injuries.’

Pioli held a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Serie A clash against Roma at San Siro, the first home match of the year for the Rossoneri.

During his meeting with the media, the Italian tactician was also asked for updates on Rafael Leao’s contract extension: “It’s an important moment because he must continue to play well,” the Rossoneri boss said, smiling.

“As for his contract extension, you should ask other people. We only speak about the pitch, we spoke about tomorrow’s game. He knows he has to continue like this. He has the quality to make a difference in every game.”

What does he miss to become a champion?

“Play all the games like in Salerno, with great intensity. He put in a complete performance, with a commitment that helped him remain in the game for 95 minutes, with and without the ball. Rafa has made great steps forward, I think he has understood what he needs to be steadily decisive.”

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao is close to reaching an agreement over a contract extension at the Stadio Meazza.

Milan will face Zaniolo tomorrow and according to reports in Italy, the Rossoneri will closely monitor the Italy international during the game.

His contract with Roma expires in June 2024 and Milan could try to sign him, should he fail to extend his stay at the Stadio Olimpico.

“He has great potential, but I don’t know him well because I don’t coach him,” admitted Pioli.

“Unfortunately, some injuries affected his development. He attacks the space and Paulo Dybala plays well between the line. Roma have a complete attacking trident.”

José Mourinho is suspended for tomorrow’s match at the Stadio Meazza so he won’t talk to the media today.
