Milan have backed Verona’s claim there was no racist abuse aimed at Sulley Muntari during Sunday’s game.

Hellas Verona saw the Curva Nord closed for one match as punishment for racist chanting at Sulley Muntari, but the club released a statement vehemently denying any such thing.

Today Milan midfielder Michael Essien commented on the need to clamp down on racism in football.

Unusually, Milan Channel wanted to point out “Essien was talking about racism in general terms, without specifically discussing what happened at the Bentegodi.

“For both Milan and Verona the €50,000 fine and closure of the Curva seems excessive for the presumed racist chants at Muntari.

“The Stadio Bentegodi crowd was ironic before the game, saying the word ‘monkey’ after every Milan player’s name was read out.

“What Essien said is therefore a general comment on racism and not specifically about Verona-Milan.”
