Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic was incredibly frustrated following the 2-1 loss to Cagliari, feeling that the game “shouldn’t have been played”.

The Emilian side took the lead in the 54th minute of the match thanks to Riccardo Orsolini but the Sardinian side responded 17 minutes later, with Leonardo Pavoletti bundling home an equaliser. Gaston Pereiro’s late winner secured all three points for Walter Mazzarri’s team.

Speaking in an interview with DAZN after the loss to Cagliari, Mihajlovic analysed the match.

“The last 20 minutes we dropped physically and that’s normal. We knew we would suffer in the last few minutes. The physical condition was what it was and we had little focus.

“It’s a shame because we could have brought home a draw. I told the guys it’s a shame we lost, but for as long as they could, they did what we had to do.”

The Bologna coach then highlighted the team’s poor physical condition currently and his unhappiness at Cagliari’s refusal to postpone the game by a day.

“Unfortunately we weren’t in the best shape because we didn’t train much. Maybe if we’d taken the advantage it would have been more difficult for them too, we were unlucky with those two chances. I had two players with cramp, it’s normal that in the end they took us where they had to take us.

“We could have managed better, but we lacked focus. I’m sorry we played a game that shouldn’t have been played. I stand by my thoughts. Cagliari didn’t accept to play the next day.”

Bologna now sit 12th in the Serie A table after 20 games, one point behind 11th place Empoli, although they have a game in hand. Their opening match of 2022 against Inter was postponed following a serious COVID outbreak in the squad.

Cagliari’s win means that they sit only one point behind 17th place Venezia, giving them a serious chance of escaping the relegation zone in the coming weeks.
