Cagliari coach Walter Mazzarri had nothing but praise for his squad following their 2-1 comeback win over Bologna tonight.

The Rossoblu took the lead in the 54th minute of the match thanks to Riccardo Orsolini but the Sardinian side responded 17 minutes later, with Leonardo Pavoletti bundling home an equaliser. Gaston Pereiro’s late winner secured all three points for Walter Mazzarri’s side.

Speaking in an interview with DAZN after the win over Bologna, Mazzari first reacted to the thrilling 2-1 comeback.

“The guys I have at my disposal gave their soul, they played a great game against a strong team with an important staff. We deserved the win.”

He commented on the impact of substitute Gastón Pereiro, who scored the late winner.

“I have to congratulate Gaston. He’s often been on the sidelines, he’s grown and found himself. He gave us a big hand in this victory.”

The Italian coach discussed what’s changed in recent weeks.

“These are guys who have embraced my tactical beliefs and I’m starting to see my team. They trusted me and started playing the way I like. My compliments also to Lovato.

“When the defence is compact, solid, then everyone can play well. Congratulations to everyone, to Bellanova, Carboni and Altare.”

Finally, Mazzarri spoke about the physical condition of striker Leonardo Pavoletti, who scored the opening goal before coming off a few minutes later due to a painful collision.

“In spite of the happiness for this victory I immediately ran to the locker room to see how he was. I saw him happy, he’s doing well.”

Cagliari’s win means that they are only one point behind 17th place Venezia in the league table, giving them a genuine shot of escaping the relegation zone in the next few weeks.
