Dries Mertens has revealed Belgium boss Roberto Martinez had predicted his goal against England: ‘That’s why I hugged him.’

Mertens has only scored twice in nine appearances in all competitions with Napoli but netted a free-kick goal against England in a Nations League clash on Sunday.

"During the previous international break I was stuck in Naples for the Coronavirus crisis, and I was very disappointed,” Mertens told reporters in Belgium, according to TuttoNapoli.

“I was then in constant contact with the national team coach. He told me that I would score against England and he was right, that’s why I hugged him.”

The Red Devils are set to face Denmark on Wednesday in their final Nations League group stage game.

Napoli play at home against Milan on November 22 when Serie A resumes after the international break.
