Nonetheless, Corriere del Mezzogiorno reports, when Martens returned to the city he called up one of his closest friends and suggested that they buy some food for the homeless in the city.

Nonetheless, Corriere del Mezzogiorno reports, when Martens returned to the city he called up one of his closest friends and suggested that they buy some food for the homeless in the city.

The pair headed down to the train station, with the Napoli man wearing a cap to avoid being recognised, and bought several margherita pizzas.

They then cut them into slices before giving them to the homeless, but the story has only emerged now.

Mertens is well known for his attachment to Naples, as he also stepped in to fund a shelter for abandoned dogs which risked going out of business.

His own dog, Juliette, is a rescue animal.
