Vincent Candela is cheering on Napoli for the Scudetto, but “if Maurizio Sarri doesn’t win he’ll remain like all the others”.

The Partenopei are four points clear of Juventus at the top of Serie A – though the Bianconeri have a game in hand – and the former Roma full-back would like to see them take the title.

“This year I’m cheering for Napoli, they deserve success after a year like this one,” Candela told Il Mattino.

“This year I’m cheering for Napoli, they deserve success after a year like this one,” Candela told Il Mattino.

“It would be right to shake things up after all the years of Bianconeri wins. I think the decisive game will be the one in Turin, in all the ones before that I don’t see anyone who can counter their superiority.

“If he manages to win the Scudetto this year then I can say that Sarri is one of the Coaches I like, but if he doesn’t win he’ll remain like all the others.

“Napoli have all the credentials to win and after three years he knows what he can ask of his players. I think it’s time to make a leap in quality.

“Sarri is a Coach who likes to play football, but I like those who win.

“[Juventus Coach Max] Allegri should be complimented for what he’s done over these years, the team changes every year but he always manages to find new incentives to win.

“This year they fight every week and remain a point off Napoli [if they win their game in hand].”

Napoli take on Candela’s former side Roma on Saturday night…

“I’ll be cheering for Roma, but with difficulty. I hope with Napoli we won’t see a performance like we saw against Milan on Sunday night.

“The players have to redeem themselves now. The team leaders – Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan – have to relay their experience to the rest of the group.

“I expect great things from [Cengiz] Under, but don’t forget he’s just a kid and he can’t carry the team on his shoulders.

“This is a transitional season for Roma, crucial players like [Mohamed] Salah and [Antonio] Rudiger have left, not to mention [Francesco] Totti’s farewell.

“I hope that, despite the ups and downs, they still manage to get a place in the top four to continue this project without a hitch.

“[Coach Eusebio] Di Francesco has the right values to become a reference point, he’s a selfless and coherent person, as well as being tactically astute.”
