Jeremy Menez believes Milan ‘deserve’ to win Sunday’s derby, and says a victory would leave Inter ‘nowhere’ in the table.

The weekend’s Derby della Madonnina sees both Milanese clubs struggling, with Milan in seventh, separated from Inter in ninth by a single point.

For two teams which have lifted 86 domestic and international trophies between them, it’s an unfamiliar set of circumstances, but Menez believes a Milan win would provide the Rossoneri with a much-needed boost.

“In my opinion, for the things we’re doing, we deserve to win,” the Frenchman declared in an interview with Tuttosport.

“We’re working towards that. And if we win, it leaves Inter nowhere in the table. Winning would be a tremendous confidence boost.

“It would be a way to get the fans even more firmly behind us, and it’s the most direct way of putting distance between ourselves and Inter, to pull away from them in the table.

“Who will decide the derby? It won’t be a player. It’ll be the Coach [Filippo Inzaghi].”

The Rossoneri lie four points behind Napoli, who occupy the third and final Champions League position, but Menez doesn’t believe that Europe’s top club competition is out of reach.

“We knew [third place] would be difficult ever since we started training in the summer.

“Football is ever more complicated, but that’s the goal we’re working toward. At the end we’ll see where we are.

“In my opinion we’ve already shown many good things, others perhaps less so.

“But that’s normal, we’re a largely new team, with new players.

“The team is growing, and things are starting to look good.”
