The investigation into Napoli legend Diego Armando Maradona’s death has concluded in Argentina, with eight medics accused of manslaughter via medical negligence, as his loss was “avoidable.”

A candidate for the greatest football player who has ever lived, Maradona died on November 25, 2020.

He suffered cardiac arrest and a pulmonary embolism, but had just been released from hospital following surgery in November and was meant to be under the close guidance of a team of medics.

His family and friends immediately warned at the time that the set-up was completely unsuitable, Maradona was not observed regularly by nurses and there wasn’t even a bathroom on the same floor.

Today the courts in Argentina concluded their investigation by filing charges against eight medics, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and six other members of the team.

They are all accused of manslaughter via medical negligence, with possible jail sentences between five and 25 years.

The ultimate verdict of the investigation was that Maradona’s death was “avoidable” and the behaviour of the medical staff only served to increase the risks he was facing, effectively “abandoning the patient.”
