José Mourinho blamed Rick Karsdorp after Roma‘s 1-1 draw against Sassuolo and so did La Gazzetta Dello Sport that described the Dutch full-back as ‘distracted.’

The Special One was anything but impressed by the former PSV defender following a 1-1 draw at the Mapei Stadium on Wednesday.

During his post-match match interviews, Mourinho said that one of his players had ‘betrayed’ the team, urging him to leave the club in January. He refused to name the footballer, but all Italian media identified Karsdorp as the guilty one.

Today’s Pagelle – player ratings – in Italian sports papers reflect Mourinho’s judgment. Karsdorp replaced Zeki Celik in the second half and was too soft defensively when the Neroverdi scored the equaliser through Andrea Pinamonti.

Armand Laurienté was free to roam on the left, finding space behind Karsdorp and delivering the assist for the ex-Empoli and Inter striker.

“He was distracted when he entered the pitch and was not bothered by Laurienté when Sassuolo scored the equaliser,” wrote Gazzetta rating Karsdorp 4.5/10.

Il Corriere Dello Sport conceded that Karsdorp’s impact wasn’t too bad but he was ‘soon thrown in the meat grinder’ and ‘blamed by Mourinho for the result.’

Karsdorp, 27, has played 11 games across all competitions this season and his contract at the Stadio Olimpico runs out in June 2025.

  1. And scorers! What the he… is that game when almost nobody scores? Look at Salernitana, for example. they have a group of “neverheards” but they have scored more than Roma with the star squad.
