Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie was left out of USA’s World Cup Qualifier against Canada for violating the COVID-19 protocol. ‘I hope to be back with the team soon’.
The Bianconeri man didn’t take part in the 1-1 draw with Canada in the qualifiers for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, as he was left out for violating the coronavirus restrictions.
The player apologised for his actions in a story posted on Instagram: “Unfortunately, I am suspended for tonight’s match due to a violation of team COVID-19 protocols.
“I am sorry for my actions. I will be cheering hard for the boys tonight and hope to be back with the team soon.”
USA CT Gregg Berhalter did not confirm that McKennie will be part of the upcoming game against Honduras on Wednesday.
“That remains to be seen,” the coach said and confirmed McKennie had violated a team policy.
McKennie was dropped for Juventus’ local derby against Torino on April 3, when Andrea Pirlo left out the American, Paulo Dybala and Arthur Melo due to violations of the COVID-19 restrictions.
Italian media reported there was a party at McKennie’s residence in Turin and the three players were then punished for disobeying the protocol.
